A big reveal at the SPATEX show 2019
Date: 25 Jan 2019
The thinking behind the design of Coventry’s new state-of-the-art waterpark and leisure centre is being revealed at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.
Robert Summerson, from FaulknerBrowns Architects, is speaking at the water leisure show SPATEX 2019 on Wednesday 30 January about the practice’s journey of designing the city’s new £36.7 million water park, called The Wave, which is set to open later this year.
The team began the six month process in late 2015, intricately designing the entire building in 3D, and will be touching on how they came up with the final design of a facility that is set to form the heart of the city’s sporting scene for generations to come.
Rob said: “Designing The Wave was unusual in the sense that it is on a very constrained site forcing us to place key components of the brief such as the leisure pools and flumes at a higher level in the building.
“For example, the pools themselves are 11 metres above street level, and such is the shape of the building, people will be able to get breathtaking rooftop views across the city when using the facility’s water slides.
“These types of facilities are usually located on out-of-town locations to allow for extra room, so the limited space threw up a range of critical design-related decisions that could well redefine the creation of other water parks moving forward.
“I’m looking forward to talking about our involvement in the project in more detail – The Wave is set to be a fantastic facility that Coventry can be proud of.”
SPATEX 2019 is a free event on at Ricoh Arena from Tuesday 29 January until Thursday 31 January and open to the general public, featuring a range of home swimming products such as swim spas and hot tubs, as well as 40 seminars and workshops covering water leisure.
People can register their attendance at www.spatex.co.uk or turn up on the day.
