England Lionesses Mark a Triumphant Return to Coventry Building Society Arena
England Lionesses marked a triumphant return to Coventry Building Society Arena with a 2-1 win against South Africa.
More than 20,400 fans came out to see Sarina Wiegman’s side continue their preparations for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in a highly competitive friendly.
Thousands visited the stadium’s fan village, which featured a live DJ, food, drink and a range of activities for fans to take part in, including penalty shootout games and more.
Fans also took part in a pre-match light show which saw them use their phones to light up Coventry Building Society Arena for the Lionesses.
England and South Africa lined up with a firework display before the Lionesses kicked-off.
Leah Williamsom opened the scoring in the 12th minute on her 50th cap with a calm and composed finish.
Chloe Kelly and Maya Le Tissier combined down the right wing as England sought to push their advantage. Le Tissier’s cross was met with a header by Grace Clinton who doubled England’s lead to make it 2-0.
South Africa pulled a goal back in the second half with superb finish from Thembi Kgatalana past Mary Earps in goal.
The Banyana Banyana pushed England throughout the second half and threatened on the break, but the Lionesses dominated possession and ran out 2-1 winners.
The fixture built on a proud heritage of major national and international sport at Coventry Building Society Arena.
