Coventry Building society arena featured in new BBC Drama: Phoenix Rise

Coventry Building Society Arena features in a new drama set in Coventry which is now available on BBC iPlayer.

Filming for BBC drama Phoenix Rise took place last August at the stadium and it sees Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf make a debut of a different sorts, with a professional acting bow.

Set in Coventry, Phoenix Rise is a coming-of-age drama that follows the stories of six students who form an unbreakable bond as they navigate the trials and tribulations of school life.

You can watch Phoenix Rise now on BBC iPlayer.

The drama, which won the Royal Television Society Midlands Award for Best Scripted Series, will also be on BBC Three on Tuesday 28 May.

Episode six features Coventry City as young footballer Darcy (played by Jayden Hanley) gets the opportunity to train with Ben Sheaf. Darcy is feeling inspired and ready to impress the scout who’s coming to watch him play later that day. His teacher Mr Edwards is encouraging – Darcy’s time is now and he deserves to get a chance at his dream.

Filming at the Arena also included a number of Sky Blues Academy staff and young players as extras too.

Talking to the BBC, Ben spoke about the filming that took place last year:

“I think the last time I acted was probably in Primary School – I think I was Joseph in a play to be honest.

“They said I did a good job, whether they were lying to me just to make me feel good I’m not too sure.

“It was a good experience. I didn’t realise how much goes on behind the scenes.

“The actors and staff made me feel at home and were really helpful.

“It was a new experience and I am pleased that I did it.”
